Hi everyone,

I'm getting a little stressed due to the fact that I have been waiting on my PR Card (renewal) for over a year now and I have to travel to Portugal in a few weeks. I've called CIC about 3 times and I always get the same info that my application seems to be fine and it's a matter of waiting for my card in the mail. Problem is that every time I check my application status, it's always the same as of June 29, 2015: In Process.

Is there anything I can do to find out if I'll be getting my card soon (before I travel) or should I apply for. PRTD when I get to Portugal?

Thanks in advance for your help.

According to this page ( http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/pr-card/apply-urgent-processing.asp ),
you could have applied for them to speed up your application between six weeks and three months before your planned departure. Closer than six weeks, and they apparently don't do it.

If you have a passport that allows visa-free travel to Canada, you can probably fly back to Canada if you manage to hide from the airline that you live in Canada. But it sounds like you've already booked your tickets, so a PRTD will likely be necessary if you don't get your PR acrd in time.

If you feel that for some reason your evidence of time spent in Canada has a serious chance of not satisfying the people you apply to for a PRTD, you could make a strategic decision to re-enter Canada at a land crossing from the US, where you'd also need to have your evidence with you in case you were questioned.

I'm currently waiting for my first PR card - but am travelling to Europe soon. In speaking with the embassy, it will take two weeks to get the permanent residency travel document (but I will be there for less than that). Does anybody know if you are allowed to apply before (send the application from here before I get there)?

Thanks for your help

You need to apply PRTD from outside Canada. They need your original passport for visa stamping. If you have visa exempt passport, then you can travel to Canada with your passport.
