Hi all,

Does Canada allow Permanent Residency in another country (New Zealand) after already having Permanent Residency in Canada?

FYI I'm a Belgian Citizen.

Any replies would be much appreciated :)

It's doesn't matter. You can even have 20 residencies. It only matters when you renew your PR or apply for citizenship...
Canada is not lenient regarding renewing your PR as you have to prove you truly lived in Canada.

Thanks for your reply :)

Do you mean that after having lived minimum 2 years out of 5 in Canada I would automatically have to proceed to Citizenship in Canada and in that case acquire a double Belgian-Canadian citizenship?

Thanks!

It will take a lot more than 2 years residency. At the moment it's 4 years in 6. So, the answer is no.

Thanks for your reply as well.

Although having acquired the PR status in NZ I would be living in Canada. Ideally I would finally acquire double citizenship Belgian-Canadian and having NZ permanent residency.

Does that seem feasible?

Thank you :)

How do you maintain NZ PR when you do not live there for more than 4 years? If you can do that, you certainly can keep NZ PR

It appears that this is quite possible.

Thanks guys for your replies, very helpful indeed.

Karen, it seems that NZ doesn't require a minimum stay once obtained. The minimum stay and other conditions are required in order to apply for PR. Once you have your NZ PR you're free to travel in and out of the country as you wish and as long as you have a valid passport.

Hi blackbear88,

Sorry for off topic question. May I know when did you apply for NZ PR? Right now the cut off is at 160 and I didn't study/work in NZ so it's really hard to meet the threshold. Any inputs from your end will be highly appreciated.

Thanks
