Permanent Residency after Second PR Card renewal.

Hello Everyone;

My family came to Canada back in 2005 and we have been living and working in Canada since then. All family members obtained Canadian Citizenship back in 2009 except for my dad. as he has been working overseas on and off since 2007 and did not manage to obtain the necessary residency requirements for citizenship.

His first Permanent Residence card expired in 2011 and he managed to get it renewed. Now his second PR card is about to expire in 6 months and he is still working overseas.

I would like to know the following:

1. What happens after his second PR expires?

Can he still obtain Canadian citizenship after his second card expires if he choose to come back to Canada before the expiry date and stay permanently?

2. Can he still apply for third renewal if he came back and stayed the 730 days?

3. If he chose to stay outside Canada, and let his PR card expire. Can he start a new sponsorship application to come back to Canada since his wife and kids are all Canadian citizens now - will this effect his application? considering his previous history.

If he stayed 2 out of last 5 years in Canada, then he can apply for PR card renewal. And if he stayed 4 out of last 6 years then he can apply for citizenship.
