Permanent Residence Card: Medical and Dental Coverage

Hi everyone,

My wife is being sponsored via Outland Spousal Sponsorship while we are living overseas and getting ready to move back to Canada next summer. She will be getting a PR card upon entry into Canada, but we are wondering how medical will work - will she be covered upon entry into Canada or does it take a lot of time? Also, are dental costs covered at all for those on newly issued PR card? A bit concerned with the cost of braces, as they are much less expensive to have a dentist work on them while we are overseas, but they will require more time in Canada to finalize them (approximately 1 visit to the dentist every 4 weeks). Any help or guidance on this is greatly appreciated.

Dental is not covered under provincial health plans. It is covered through employer health insurance or out of pocket. Even for dental cleanings,fillings, any dental work is not covered.

Don´t bother coming to canada until the braces haven´t been finalized. We payed 3000$ for 15 months of treatment (Cleaning, exchanging wires...). The first orthodontist we went to asked for 7000$. Coming from Europe the dental care here is mediocre and insanely expensive. Both of you should get absolutely everything fixed in your home country and then in the future go to the dentist while on vaccation at home.

There may be a waiting period for medical coverage. It depends on the province where you will be living. You can check the appropriate provincial website for information on eligibility and wait times. Dental is not covered by public health plans, but is usually covered to some extent by employers plans.

Only certain employers provide access to an extended benefit plan. When looking for a job, looking for access to extended health benefit plan is something you should look for.

In addition, very few extended benefit plan will cover braces for adult since you didnt' mention any children in your application.

Also, a PR card won't be there when she arrives. She can apply for SIN after she arrived/landed as a PR. Her first PR will be mailed to the address provided. But currently it's taking months. (delay due to COVID) It may be different when she actually lands.
