Hi all,

So I sent off my PR application through Canadian Experience Class September 2014, and received my AOR February 2015. I had to get my work permit extended last year May 2015, it was approved and I received a work permit which expires May 2016. That is soon approaching. I was wondering if I should be applying for another extension? And if anyone could provide any information or details on what to do, that'd be great thanks!!

Wait. Apply a week or two before your current one expires if you don't get PR by then.

What you need to do are:

1. Look at how long they take for processing a work permit.
2. Calculate when you should apply for the extension. If it says it takes a month, then feel free to apply on April (which is unlikely the case).
3. Check you permanent resident application process. If you only got an AOR or maybe a medical request, then most likely you need to extend your WP.

Why do we need to extend the WP? Because both our OHIP and SIN expire on the same day. You will not have health coverage, and your employer will question the legality of your employment there.

Seriously, apply for a new open work permit as soon as you can!! If you get into implied status and lose your job, you cannot start a new job for perhaps another 3 months or longer until you get your new document. Of course, if you are financially independent, then you might have nothing to fear. Still, it would freak me out. You are also not allowed to leave Canada.

When it comes to immigration, think this way: Better safe than sorry.
