Hi all,

Does anyone know if they request a passport from everyone? I am from Michigan and got into Canada using an enhanced license since I do not have a passport. Should I go get a passport while I am waiting? I dont want to get one if I dont have to but seeing all these people talking about it makes me wonder....

If you are applying for PR, I think a passport is mandatory, even if they don't need to apply a visa counterfoil.
When you "land", a stamp is placed in the passport with the COPR number written underneath it.

I am from michigan as well. Yes you do need ur passport. Its better to send it with your application right away. Thats what my lawyer said.

In the country specific checklist for the USA (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/3910e.pdf) it states...

9 TRAVEL DOCUMENTS AND PASSPORTS
Passports or travel documents for you, your spouse or common-law partner and dependent
children. Include only copies of pages showing the passport number, date of issue and expiration,
your photo, name, surname (family name), date and place of birth. Children must have their own
passport, separate from their parents. If you reside in a country different from your nationality,
include a copy of your visa for the country in which you currently reside. Please note that all
prospective immigrants must hold a valid regular passport; diplomatic, official or public affairs
passports are not valid for an application for permanent residence in Canada.

I didnt see that for inland applications...It just states passport OR travel document which I have. I am going to just get it to be safe I guess. I thought if I was inland I didnt need to "land". Thanks guys.

You still "land". It's just done as an interview at a local CIC office instead of at a port of entry.

Its better to send it with your application right away. Thats what my lawyer said.

This is very bad advice if the lawyer is referring to the physical passport.

A US citizen is visa-exempt to Canada, so in almost all cases only a photocopy of the passport needs to be sent to CIC, not the actual passport.

Not the actual passport. What I meant is a copy of it. Sorry
