I am applying for immigration, my passport validit for another 6 months, do i need to renew it, or I can appply using it? does it affect if I changed my passport during the immigration process which might take up to two years?

I think that you are better off to update it first. That is what we did just so there would be no confusion or delays later on. I don't know if it is advisable to change your passport half way through but I would guess it isn't a good idea. Also when you receive your visa in your passport, you have to land in Canada before your medical expires or your passport expires, whichever happens first so that might make your timelines very tight depending on where you are applying from.

the process will take 18 months, so when i recieve the visa i will recieve it on the new passport. my question was if it's okay to change the passport during the immigration process itself?

thx

Do I need a passport or travel document?
You and your family members must have valid passports or travel documents. If any of the documents are to expire soon, you should renew them and provide copies of the new passport or travel document to the office processing your application. Diplomatic, official, service or public affairs passports cannot be used to immigrate to Canada. You must have a valid regular or private passport when you arrive. The validity of your visa may be affected by the validity of your passport.

Direct quote from the immigration guide. I personally would update them first so they have everything they need from the start but that is up to you.

No problem. You will have to show your new passport when you receive the COPR (permission to enter Canada). Make sure to save and show your old passport too.

Of course, it would be simpler to renew your passport first, but if it has e.g. a year of validity left, you'll logically be renewing mid-process.
