Hi,

I just received CoPR, and I have to land prior to or on 12-20-2014.

My Swedish passport expires August 8 2015, and I will be in Canada up until then.

My question:

Can I renew my passport now, and bring both at the time of landing?

Also, do I really have to renew it now? Are people successful in renewing a PP from within Canada?

your VALID passport MUST match the name on the copr, otherwise you won't be able to land. not only is this for landing, it is also getting provencial services/sin # after landing. if you want to update your passport now, you will need to get your COPR re-issued. I highly doubt CBSA will let you use an invalid passport to land, even if you have another one with you. Again, THE NAMES MUST MATCH!!!

If you don't want to deal with getting your copr changed now, then you will need to wait until AFTER you receive your first PR card. Once you receive your initial PR card, you can pay $50 and have the name changed on it and get a replacement issued. at this point, since you have your approval paper in hand, you might as well land and wait until later to change your name. it's really not recommended to mess with it now.

1. I am not changing my name nor did I say that. I would get a new PP #, though.

2. I have read that others have just brought the old passport with them at time of landing.

Question:

Is it OK to re-enter Canada with a short validity than 6 months? As I will be a PR in mid february 2015, My passport will have less than 6 months as it expires Aug 8. I have my sister's wedding to go to in Sweden on the 12th of Feb or so.

I think there is a slight confusion. Let me see if I can help.

You have to land by Dec 2014. And your passport expires August 2015. So when you land with your CoPR (before Dec 2014), that means your existing passport will be valid for more than 8 months. Hence this is not an issue at all.

You become a PR the very day you land with your CoPR (not when you get your PR card). You cannot become a PR on Feb 2015 as your CoPR requires you to land before Dec 2014. So if you leave in Feb, you would have been a PR for almost 3 months. What you can do while in Canada (after becoming a PR) is that contact your embassy and get your passport renewed. As long as there are no issues (criminal records etc), it should be very easy to get it renewed here in Canada.

Once you are a PR, you only need a valid passport and a PR card to re-enter Canada. The stamp on your old passport is not required.

If you get your PR card before you leave in Feb, then you have nothing to worry about. Simply bring your new passport and PR Card. If not, then you would need someone to mail the PR card to you. This is just to ensure that you would not have any problems while trying to re-enter Canada. Quite a few people - especially from visa-exempt countries have re-entered without the PR card, but that may not be guaranteed.

Hope this helps clarify.

Thanks for your reply!

My concern is, can I re-enter (after my visit to Sweden for a few days) with my PR card and a passport that expires within 6 months ?

Will this help? It says one need not worry.

3. Is it correct that my passport has to be valid for at least 6 more months when I travel to Canada?

The passport has to cover the whole duration of stay in Canada and must allow re-entry to the country of passport issuance. There is no legal regulation as to how many months/years the passport must be valid beyond return from Canada.
That aside, technically speaking PR gives you a right to stay in Canada forever. Hence if your passport is valid for less than 6 months should not affect your re-entry.
