I've received the request to mail in my passport to the consulate in NYC. I travel between the US and Canada frequently for work and I am going to have a hard time parting with my passport for the 30 days they say they will take to get it back to me with a visa... not only because I need to travel but also because I need to plan travel, etc. which I can't do without knowing when I'll get it back. I don't understand how they can expect you to part with your passport for a month!

I'm hoping this is the final aggravation in this ridiculous process.

Yes, this is the last step. Only thing you have to do after this is land.

Unfortunately you will just have to stay put for a month or so until you get your passport back but once you get it back .. you are done!! Congrats :)

Please thank God you proces is over in less than 6 months. I know its hard with work commitments andnot knowing if you are going or coming. but its a sacrifice you'll have to make Fortunately and unfortunately.
but look at it this way, the sooner you send it the sooner you'll get it back

So please send them the Passport and all the best with your new life in Canada, Congratulations

Congratulations..!!

congrats!

not sure on the process or if it's possible for you, but what about those NEXUS cards?

edit... nm, that takes 6-8 weeks... lol

Well, first of all, count yourself as lucky that your application was not processed through a visa office where they keep your passport for several months before issuing you a visa!

If you check Trackitt for completed applications through Buffalo, you'll see that many were processed in less than a month -- some in a week! -- so in all likelihood you'll get it back in under a month. See: http://www.trackitt.com/canada-immigration-trackers/family-class But of course Buffalo won't be able to guarantee you anything so unfortunately you'll just have to submit it and wait. I would think you have already explained the matter to your employer so I'm sure that they will understand that it's something you have no control over.

abedelia,
how long did they give you to mail in your passport?
My file is currently at the NYC office as well. I will be needing my passport the first part of Oct, so I was wondering what the time limit is.

Does NY allow you to get your passport stamped in person?? I know Buffalo does. Could you go in person?

Congrats, Abedelia! You finally got it! Like others have said, I don't think it will take the whole 30 days.

By the way, my husband got his request to send his passport too. His is thru the LA office. They've had it for 4 business days now and we are anxiously awaiting its return so we can finally land his butt here in Quebec :P

Congrats again!

Unfortunately, you can't drop off your passport in person at the NYC office.

You have 30 days from when you get PPR to send in your PP.

I've looked at some NYC cases... they are older, but they seem to get the PP back in about 2 weeks... 30 days is the max time so it's likely you'll get it back sooner :) I'm also sending my PP to NYC this week :)

Hi everyone, I am quite new to these threads and am trying to take in all the information that I can to try and figure out what is going on with our application. We are processing through Delhi and my partner received his request for his passport and fees (which we had paid at the beginning of the process). Does this request mean that they are happy with the application? Or is it just the first thing they ask for when starting the process. So confused and any feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks.

canindian - for many visa offices asking for the passport is the last step and means you have been approved. But I think the New Dehli office is different, I think they ask for your passport up front and hold on to it while they process. The good news is, though, that they are one of the fastest visa offices :)

Thanks giggles! Was hoping they all worked with a uniform process :P But that would be too much to hope for....lol

Yes we are lucky that Delhi is a fast processing centre :)

Thanks for your kind words everyone, I am annoyed with this because I need my passport to travel for work but I should also count myself lucky that my PR application went smoothly and I'm almost done!!!! :D

Onthemove, my PPR letter said that I have 60 days to send in my passport. I am not sure if this is the case every time but mine went to the NYC office and that is what the letter said. I feel lucky that I have so much time because I had to delay for about a month because of a trip that I had to go on. I will send it in on Monday and I guess I won't be traveling anywhere until I get it back. It should be quick but the fact that I don't know when I get it back means that I can't really make any plans. One good thing that I'm glad I did was when I renewed my passport, I also got a passport card. Supposedly you can't fly using it but you can drive across the border, so that is a way for me to travel if I really need to.

It is amazing how long you have to wait to get notified that they have your application, but once they start moving on it, if all goes smoothly, it can get done quickly. Good luck everyone!! See you in Canada!!!!!!
