passport request - spousal application

Dear Experts,

My wife has received passport request from Newdelhi visa office. Why do they need her passport early in the process.we have applied for her immigration in march.Will they check and return her passport back or will they grant her visa?Hers is outside canada application process since i am in canada currently.

Please let me know.

Dear Friends,

Usually how long will New Delhi Visa office keep the passport with them?..It's been more than 2 months now, they are still not sending back my wife's passport.

I'm not an expert but I've heard that at the India and China VOs, they take in the passports upon receiving applications to prevent people from applying for travel visas and getting into Canada before their PRs have been granted. Good luck.

The ND visa office asks for the passport at the very start of the process - so you probably still have a number of months to wait.
