passport request sent but work permit expires april 2012

need help and advise. Our work permit will expire April 11, 2012 and we submitted an application for extension last March 15, 2012. Next day March 16, 2012 we receive an email for our passport request and RPRF so we submit our passport last March 19 and it reached Fort Erie March 22, 2012 at 7:48am. Yesterday morning we receive a letter from CIC about our extension, our application was refused. Because we don't have enough time to apply for the new LMO what should we do to remain in Canada while waiting for or PR? Is it ok to wait while our work permit is expired? thank you.

What did the refusal letter say? Did it say you have to leave Canada within 90days?
