Passport renewal while application is processing

I applied for PR through inland sponsorship in September 2018. My passport expires in October 2019. By the time I get a PPR or need to go for a landing interview (assuming everything goes smoothly) my passport will probably only have a month or two before expiry.

So my first question is, do I NEED to renew to complete my process?

And if I do:

Do I then have to inform IRCC? and how would I go about doing that?

Yes. Your passport needs to be valid for at least six more months from the date of your landing.
