My friend is a college student who also has a work permit because she is enrolled in a co-op program. Her son, accordingly, goes to school. But the problem is, he comes of age on his next birthday (by the standards of their home country), and both his inner and foreign passports expire and, supposedly, he needs to apply for new ones (in person only, you can't acquire them at the embassy).
The student's visa in his foreign passport is only valid before his birthday, because the passport is only valid till this date. Naturally, he is entitled to new passports and a visa extension, but it will be a pain in the ass and a waste of a great sum of money for them to go back for new passports.
The question is, is there a way to avoid going back to their home country? Ideally, they don't want to go back at all, they want to get permanent residency.
