Hello,

My Indian passport expires in Sept 2013 and I am graduating from UBC (with a 2 year masters degree) in May 2013.

My issue is that I have to apply for passport renewal (in Vancouver) before I apply for work permit. My job will start on June 6th. I am afraid that if I apply for passport renewal, I might not get it back before June and hence might not be able to start my job (and possibly lose it). If I don't renew my passport, my work permit will only be issued till Sept 2013 (current passport expiry date).

Has anyone had experience renewing pp in Vancouver? How long does it take? Their website says 40 days but my pp needs some changes as listed below.

If I don't renew my pp now and get a work permit only till Sept 2013, can I get the work permit extended later?

I would really appreciate your reply. Thank you so much!

Some additional info that can affect pp renewal time:
  • My permanent address in India has changed.
  • My Current passport was issued when I was 17 and now my appearance has changed a bit.
  • My mother has changed her last name from her maiden name to our family name.

Best regards!

I applied for PP renewal for my wife and it came back in roughly 2-1/2 months through VFS. I am sure VFS is the authorized agency to process PPs. For any changes, you will have to provide documents. If you have that, go ahead and submit it. The other thing you can do is, let everything remain the same for now (as I assume you are going to stay in Canada).

It is best that you get your PP renewed before you apply for work permit. Not sure if WP are extended later.

RockinCanada, thank you for the reply!

I have to get the work permit before 2-1/2 months as my job starts in June. I guess I will apply under the Tatkal service to get it done faster.

Do you know if I can apply for the "renewal" of pp instead of applying for a "new" passport as my pp has not expired yet? I don't understand the difference between "renewal" (takes 10 days) and "new" pp (takes 40 days).

regards!

In any case they are going to send you new passport. So when you send photos, send 4 photos whereas website says 2 photos for renewal. They sent my pps back for not sending 4 photos.

Thanks for the reply!

One more question: Did you have to submit notarized copies of your wife's immigration document (work permit, study permit, etc) or just a photocopy?

I read online that it costs $50-$100 to get one document notarized in Canada. Please let me know if you have any information regarding that. Thanks!
