Hi,

I am the sponsor for my wife (Family class). We are about to submit the application. My passport expires sometime in August. It hasn't expired yet when we submit the application. Will there be a problem when it expires? Do I have to send updated passport info?

For sponsor supporting documents, I chose to photocopy my birth certificate instead of my passport.

However, in the sponsored spouse document checklist, for item 9: Travel documents and passports, it says: Passports or travel documents for you, your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children.

As the sponsor, do I need to include a copy of my passport in the sponsored spouse section? It doesn't make any sense, unless it was me and her being sponsored to come to Canada by someone else.

Thanks!!

Hey,

you can submit your application with your current passport. Just write a note on it somewhere (on the photocopy for example) that you are aware that the passport is expiring soon, and you will be renewing it. Once you have the renewed passport, send a copy to your VO (London if I'm not mistaken).

I would advise to include a copy of your passport and a birth certificate, it might be easier - to establish identity if you have a very common name etc.

In the sponsored document checklist: you don't need to include your passport copy. Remember: some of the forms are common to various streams of applications, and it is supposed to cover every possible situation. In your case, if you're Canadian and sponsoring your wife, and nobody else, you can just send the copy of her passport, that's enough.
