Passport Expiry - Query

I have a Temporary Work Permit valid until May 2013.
My Passport expires in May 2012, I'll be starting the application process for a new one in the next few weeks to ensure it's here prior to the end of this year.

Do I need to remove my Work Permit from my (soon to be) old passport and staple it into my new one when it comes? Or do I carry both with me when I travel in and out of Canada? I'm visa exempt.

Also, when my work permit expires in May 2013, do I need to be out of Canada immediately, or am I entitled to stay as a visitor for a period after expiry? I intend to finish working in April 2013.

Thanks!

Hi Scully,

I would say you have to take it out and put it in your new passport.

I have another question though for you. You and your bf are in the exact same situation than I am with my girlfriend. I'm from Switzerland, on a work permit in Canada (intercompany transfer like you) and my girlfriend is US Citizen, living in the US. We havent been living together for the same reasons you mentioned in your earlier posts for your situation.

Anyways, we are planning to do get married as well and move her here on a OWP.

Now my question for you is: are you and your boyfriend are getting married in Canada or the US? Like either way, you probably better dont mention that you are entering the US for the purpose of getting married or vice versa if you do it in Canada. That usually rises the red flags at customs I heard.

Thanks for letting me know

Yes, remove the work permit. You don't need to staple it to your new passport. Just keep it somewhere safe. Yes, you should have it when you re-enter Canada. You are supposed to leave Canada at the expiry of your WP. You can apply for a change of conditions from worker to visitor BEFORE the WP expires. If a decision on the visitor application has not been reached by the time the WP expires, you are allowed to stay in Canada on "implied" status.

Thanks rjessome, we're planning to leave Canada prior to work permit expiration anyway, but I wanted to know the rules. Appreciated!

Swiss84 - Congratulations to you and your girlfriend. :)

We're marrying in the USA next month. It has never been mentioned to the customs officials at the border crossing at Windsor when we travel to see each other, though one did ask once whether we were planning to get married. I just said we'll see.
My partner has the marriage license already, so there was no holdup on his end in that regard.
We just figured we're better off marrying in his country of citizenship so at least one of us has the proper paperwork (ie marriage certificate) from home.

We're hoping to have him apply for his OWP (and receive it) at the border in early June.
Let me know how you two get on! :)

Hi Scully,

Did everything work out with the wedding and applying for OWP?

We are not quite there yet but are finalizing it more and more. Can you let me know if you had any trouble going into the US for the actual wedding?

If you could let me know if you encountered any problems at all that would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot!
