Hi everyone,

I am a Brazilian currently in Canada under my TRV and have just recently been granted my Extension visa so I can become common-laws status, which ill be in 3 days from today, and then apply for a sponsorship. The things is:

1) Both my passport and TRV will expire on JAN 2019. My extension expires on DEC, 2018.

2) I would like to apply for my sponsorship by the end of August, since im going on vacation to the U.S. next week, hoping that I am allowed to. And to make it a little more complicated, Brazil is on Election year which means I will not be able to vote and since in Brazil voting is mandatory, renewing my passport at this circumstance, they said its most likely that my passport will have a shorter validation. Im guessing around 1 year until it expires.

What should I do?

My plan is to renew my passport in August, then renew my TRV, to finally apply for a sponsorship. But since I don't know how long the passport will be valid for, I might have to renew both passport and visa again, after applying. will that be ok? did anyone go through that? I need help, please.

Im sorry if this is a little too confusing, but ask me anything and ill try my best to make it more clear.

Thank you,

Madeleine.

Yes you can renew your passport after passing the application. Just update IRCC as soon as you get a new one.

You don’t need a valid *visa* (TRV) to stay in Canada, just a valid *status*.

Thank you so much for replying.

I am completely lost and overwhelmed with informations and I get a little too lost. I have heard lots about this, that only need a valid status, that does that mean? does it mean that once I apply for the sponsorship the visa is not important anymore? like a implied something

A visa, TRV, is simply a stamp in your passport that allows you to board a commercial carrier to travel to Canada. It does not have anything to do with status in Canada. You were granted visitor status by CBSA when you entered and you just extended that visitor status. Visitor status ends when you leave Canada, so you will be reassessed as a new visitor when you return from your trip.

If you apply inland with an OWP while you still have valid status, your status will be maintained. If you apply inland without an OWP or if you apply outland, you will need to continue extending your visitor status as needed.
