Hi! I've been a permanent resident for 7 years now and last September applied for citizenship. Last week I applied for a new German passport at the consulate and they kept my old expired one. It will be send back to me along with my new one in about 6 or 7 weeks. Now this week I get the letter from CIC to write my citizenship test next week and to bring all current and expired passports with me. What will happen when I don't have my last passport? Will they give my an RQ or can I supply my old passport at a later date?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

Hello June Bug,

You can always request the test to be moved to another date or you can let the immigration officer know that you do not have the older passport, and he will give you an RQ and ask you submit older passport copy.

Usually right before the test, immigration office will check passports and other documentation.

Yes. You can provide the information about your passport along with RQ at a later date if you don't have your passport with you on the Test.

If I were in your shoes, I would go to German Consulate and explain them the situation. I would request the old passport back for the test even if I have to cancel the passport renewal process. Trying to reschedule the test or getting RQ will delay application process considerably. But German Consulate might have their limitations too. If they are not able to return your passport in time for your test, I would take copies of all the pages of passport with me to the test (if you already have a scanned copy of your old passport) and explain the whole situation to the CIC officials at the Test. It is only hope. But they can still issue you a RQ.

Another option is to request another test date as muppala suggested.

Thank you muppala and ajslp for your answers. Just browsing through this forum I learned that getting an RQ or delaying the test is not a good option. I was able to pick up my old German passport today at the consulate. I just have to mail it back to them after my test.
