Hi,

Combing through the forum, I wasn't able to find a very definitive (or recent) answer to this query, so hoping someone with experience could help out here.

Question - I live on rental and my parents will be landing and staying with me. The lease is solely in my name. In this case, how do I provide proof of address for OHIP and Driving License applications?

I understand Bank Statements are an option, but that would mean i wait for at least a 4-6 weeks before I get the first statement.

Would the lease in my name and a letter confirming they will be staying with me suffice?

Would there be any other options which I could consider?

They should get "Ontario photo card"

You add them to the lease.
I was considering this as well, but before I speak with my landlord, would this not mean I have to re-sign a lease for 12 months again?

Also, landlord might be hesitant to add names of parents as they don't have any credit history etc in Canada as of yet. However, I can speak with him regarding this, once I ascertain it doesn't mean having to sign a 12 month lease.

No, and adding parents should have no impact - you remain the tenant of record, and there is a standard form of the lease to add other family members. I forget what it's called - we got one literally just to be able to add the minors in our household so that they could deal with formalities. It's basically just a plain lease where they add other people; I think our landlord/agent called it the 'govt lease', they knew what it was for.

Now, some landlords might try to use this to renegotiate something, or if they have an unrelated issue. Push back. Just tell them you need this for your parents to register for various stuff.

[Yes, they're basically not allowed ot charge extra: "Typically, a landlord cannot raise rent or charge extra fees when a tenant adds a roommate or occupant. Ontario’s Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) prohibits landlords from collecting any refundable or non-refundable fees, except for a previously agreed upon deposit for keys and/or one month’s rent. However, if a guest damages the rental property, the tenant who invited the guest may be responsible for the damage."

But ask nicely. If your parents will just be staying with you a while and need this in order to get OHIP and the like and will move in due course, tell them that.]

Thank you. This was very helpful and it seems this is the correct, legal route to go with. I will speak with my landlord - who has been reasonable to this point and see if he can agree to add parents to the lease. Should make my life much easier.

If they will be living with you it is in the best interest of the landlord to have a full list of who actually is a tenant. Depending on your lease you may also have to notify the landlord if your parents want to live with you to begin with.

Correct. They will initially have to live here with us till they settle in. Timeline will vary depending on multiple factors, so best to go this route and inform landlord.

If landlord causes problems, then will consider other options, including moving out to a new place.
