You can add a co-signer later, but only if there is a change in family composition and only from that year forward. So in the tax year you have your baby and family size increases by +1, this will cause a re-assessment of income and for that tax year going forward you can have your spouse's income count as co-signer.

Your spouses income can NOT be added to your income for assessment at family size you submitted app with since you did not have a co-signer at that time.

See here for more info: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/bulletins/2011/ob324.asp
Thanks Rob_TO.

Would you be able to answer this:

What would be the application number for the Background / Declaration form? Should this be left empty or is it the confirmation number received with the invitation letter from IRCC?

Also, my address changed recently and it is not the same as the address on the invitation letter from IRCC. Will this cause any problems? Should I include a letter with my application to say my address changed?

Leave the application number blank, CIC will create one and put it themselves. If you have uci # (from their any previous visa applications, you should put UCI in UCI field).
For change of address right a brief letter, and let them know your new and old address.

Hi guys,

I have a question: my wife took a maternity leave in 2014 and we should include her maternity EI income to sponsor my parents. I know that the maternity EI should count as a special benefit and should be included in the total income, but my question is how do IRCC know if this EI income is a maternity EI not a regular EI? As for the application, I just provide our SIN numbers, and IRCC will check our income based on these.

When using my wife's SIN, I accessed into her CRA account and checked her income record in 2014, in the Option C, it only shows that my wife has an EI income but not specified which kind of EI it is, there is no any record for her 2014 T4E either. So in this case, how do IRCC know this EI income is a special benefit other than regular benefit?
I am worried that IRCC make a mis-judgement and reject our case.

Thank you.

Should I write it on top by my hand it is additional page or not and also keep everything on that or just applicant name??
Thanks
Or you can make one more copy of the same form (or Section C).. if attaching copy of form just put applicant name in the field (in Section A) and then fill out Section C. Staple this copy with the original one..

Unfortunately EI of any kind is not considered as income for sponsoring purpose including maternal EI. This is also the same for other non work income such as scholarship, fellowship or assistanship for PhD students. You can confirm with IRCC before sending in application or it will be stuck in the queue and you maynot be able to apply next year

Incorrect. Regular EI is not included. EI special benefits, including maternity, are considered income.

Totally agree with canuck_in_uk.. Aslo the scholarships/fellowships/ TA/RA are all considered income and you pay taxes (how much and what way that's different) then gets added to your other income and shows up on your NOA.
I said considered as income but not permanent income, so you if you are looking for loans/mortgages showing your scholarships you will be turned back.

Completely wrong! IRCC or previously CIC only consider one number, that is line 150, nothing else is considered, no appeal, no documentations will be accepted, only black and white, what is in line 150 is what need to be met. EI, Scholarship, Fellowship etc are other income but is not included in line 150. In the past there have been several people including income such as scholarship, fellowship, EI and they got returned after 2 years for not meeting income. You can submitting an application but if you do not meet line 150, it is just a waste of time

Incorrect. Regular EI is not included. EI special benefits, including maternity, are considered income.
Again, completely wrong, only income included in line 150 is considered for sponsorship, nothing else matters, regular EI is considered other income, yes that is true but it is not in line 150 and IRCC has been very clear and black and white, only what in line 150 is considered

In line 150, it includes my wife's maternity EI. And I am 100% sure, the maternity EI WILL be considered as special benefits and count in the total income, please read IMM5516E carefully, the only question is I AM not sure how IRCC distinguish the special EI and regular EI. Did your mean that, if it is the regular EI, it won't be listed in the line 150? I doubt it as that is the total income and all kinds of income should be added to that line (line150) in OPTION C or NOA when applying tax return.

Stop providing bad information.

EI benefits are included in line 150. IMM5516, Income Sources for the Sponsorship of Parents and Grandparents, specifically states that sponsors need to subtract "Amounts paid to you under the Employment Insurance Act, OTHER SPECIAL BENEFITS" from line 150. Maternity is an EI special benefit; it is NOT subtracted from the line 150 amount and is therefore included in the income total.

You can also take a look at this http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5482Eguide.asp.

Question 12. – Calculation of income based on the “Notice of Assessment”

12.A: Print the amount that appears at line 150 of the last Notice of Assessment issued to you by the CRA for the most recent taxation year.

12.B: Enter all of the following payments that were included in the amount at line 150 of your Notice of Assessment, add them up and print the total:
  • Provincial instruction or training allowance;
  • Social assistance paid by a province;
  • Guaranteed income supplement paid under the Old Age Security Act; and
  • Employment insurance: maternity, parental and sickness benefits paid under the Employment Insurance Act ARE considered income. Other payments such as employment insurance and federal training allowances are not considered as income.
12.C: Deduct the total entered at 12.B (line 6) from the amount at 12.A (line 1). The result 12.C is your total income as per this method of calculation.

Ignore anything that this poster says. They have provided completely wrong info many times in the past as well.
