Hi,

My wife who is out of the country is pregnant and due date is end of September. I'd like to ask when is the best time to apply "PARENTAL BENEFITS" online? I'm currently working and service Canada advised me that I am eligible to get parental benefits. However, I was not able to get detailed info regarding the application process. I have to know asap if I can apply while I's still working as I have to book my flight ticket.

To the lists below, only the 3rd bullet is the one I don't have

Parental benefits
It is important to read the following instructions and gather the necessary information. This will help ensure that there are no delays in processing your application.
You will need to provide the following personal information:

- your Social Insurance Number (SIN) - if your SIN begins with a 9, you will need to provide proof of your immigration status and work permit;

- the SIN and the name of the other parent;

- your mother's maiden name;

- the date of birth of your newborn or, in the case of an adoption, the date on which your child was placed with you (you must also provide the full name and address of the agency handling the adoption);

- your mailing and residential addresses, including postal codes (if you do not have a usual place of residence, you must apply in person at your local Service Canada Centre);

- your complete banking information, including branch number, financial institution name and number, and your account number (as shown on your cheque or bank statement), to have your payments deposited automatically into your bank account using direct deposit.

- If you are receiving or will receive a pension, you will need to provide the type of pension (e.g. CPP/QPP, insurance, retirement pension from an employer), the start date, amount, and who is paying the pension. If you do not have this information at this time, you will need to provide it to us by calling 1-800-206-7218.

To the best of my knowledge, since you are the father, you cannot apply until after the baby is born.

Also for child benefits you can't apply until the child is back in Canada living with you.

Yeah you have to apply after the baby is born. Only with maternity leave can you apply before the baby's born, but your wife cannot since she's not eligible clearly.

. . . and if it is Parental EI Benefits that you are also applying for, you will need an ROE (Record of Employment) from your employer. It took me a "month" for me to get my ROE for the same purpose (they were still using paper ROE's at the time).
