Background Info:
  • I’m Canadian. I live and work in Canada.
  • My fiancé is Chinese. He lives and works in China.
  • Our relationship began 3 years ago as classmates in the UK. After graduation, we returned to our home countries for work and I’ve visited him in China 3 times (each time a duration of 2-3 weeks). I plan to visit him in China again this winter holiday.
  • He successfully received a visitor visa and will be visiting me in Canada this summer.
  • We plan to get married in Canada next year. It will be a small ceremony, followed by a medium-sized reception. Then we’ll fly to China and to hold another wedding reception for his family and friends.
After our wedding, is there a recommended length of time to wait before we apply for the outland spousal sponsorship? Can we start the application and apply soon (2-3 months) after the wedding? We’d really like to start a life together, as soon as possible.

You can apply anytime after the wedding. You will need to provide proof of the length/genuineness of the relationship in any case, so apply as soon as you are married.

As already answered to you, you can apply directly after wedding however you need to have marriage certificate which takes around 2-3 months to get (at least in Ontario). You can only apply with valid marriage certificate otherwise your application will not be accepted.

In your situation, try and amass as much information on proof of genuineness of the relationship, photos, tickets (email or boarding pass), receipts of gifts etc. With that you can go for an inland spousal sponsorship application. Ensure you keep all the boarding passes for visits from here on out to show as proof along with pictures.

If there is not too much of time lost between your Canadian reception and Chinese reception, then go for the application right after the second reception.
