Outland sponsorship... Is It Really That Difficult?

Hi all,

I'm a PR living overseas who's waiting to get Citizenship. My spouse also lives overseas with me, and I'm planning to submit an outland spousal sponsorship application once I get my citizenship.

After some reading on the internet, I'm starting to get the impression that Outland Sponsorship has an extremely high rejection rate. If I'm not mistaken, I think the hardest part is proving that you'll settle in Canada after getting married (I, unfortunately, don't own a house in Canada nor work remotely for a Canadian company as of the moment).

Any thoughts on this? Is Outland Application really that scary and difficult?

Thanks!

Outland sponsorship application is not hard at all. It’s very straight forward. You will find all the details from documentation required to how to fill the docs and file the application under the basic and detailed guides available on IRCC website. However, in your case you might need to provide additional documents proving your intent and plan to stay in canada. I am not sure what those documents can be, probably someone else who faced similar situation can help or you can hire a professional for that matter. Having said that, outland sponsorship application is not hard at all, go for it! All the best!!

The fact that you left Canada very soon after qualifying for citizenship and are applying while abroad will create doubt that you intend to move back to Canada with your spouse so I would be prepared to be required to show significant proof that you will be moving back to live in Canada. I would actually suggest relocating to Canada during the sponsorship and get a job, sign a lease/buy a home so there aren't any doubts

As far as proving that you will move back to Canada... We've applied while my husband (the citizen) is finishing his graduate degree. We have not gotten SA yet so no guarantee it is enough, but we showed the following for his intent to return to Canada

- He maintained Canadian bank account and credit card
- Detailed list of jobs he has applied for (job title, location, date application submitted, if they had gotten back to him, interview date etc)
- Mentioned he'd looked at apartments online
- Numerous visits to his mom in Canada and to friends' weddings
- He also had a letter of explanation explaining why he left Canada (graduate school) and that he intends to go back when his degree is done and listing out his supporting documents for intent to return

He recently got a job offer and just signed a lease this weekend, so I will upload the copy of his lease and his job offer letter via webform to show them that he is going back.

Thanks for sharing your insight! Just curious, I've heard the processing time is about 1 year for outland sponsorship. What did you put for the move-in date for your lease, given that your visa isn't approved yet?

Well, his job starts June 1, so he got a lease that has him in Canada by then since he has to work from within Canada. Our daughter and I will come in on visitor visas using the dual intent entry. (We are US citizens so that is an option for us for which I am so grateful.)
