Hello all,

I had some questions, that I couldn't really find answers to on any other website. So I'm going to ask them here, since this seems like a good place to get advice from people with experience.

I am a US citizen who is engaged to a Canadian, I am currently in Canada 'visiting' while staying with my fiance, I have the regular 6-Month stamp on my passport. We plan on getting married in the next 1-2 months.

My first question is, should the sponsorship application be sent off as soon as we are married? I am going to file outland, btw.

Also, If the answer to that is Yes, when should I get my medical and police forms done? I know they take time to do, and I am most worried about the Police considering I am in Canada and not sure as to how long it will take to obtain and how to go about requesting it.

Third question, Has anyone had any problems with extending their stay in Canada when filing for a extension siting their Sponsorship as a reason?

If anyone could lend me some advice that would be great! lol. This whole process is so confusing / stressful to me. Every time I start to look at the application forms, I feel panicked.

I feel you.

I did the same thing. I got married here and 1 month after I sent my application and I did outland. There is no problem about it.
When my visa was about to expire, I extended it. So now I can stay till September, but in september I'm going to try to renew it again.

As far as for the medical's exam, I did it here and it's cheaper than in the USA. Just check in the website to know where you can do it.

Police checks, well...I had to go to my embassy here and get a document allowing my sister to get it for me there.

Hope it's helped.

Au revoir!

Thank you for your quick answer. :)

Did you have your medical done before you sent in your application? Also, with the police check, did your sister pick it up from an embassy or did the form you got allow her to request it and it be sent to her?

You must do the medicals before send it to CIC in Mississauga.

Since I'm in Canada, the embassy from my country made a document allowing her to get all the Police Certificates for me.
Once she had all 3 that is needed for me, she sent it by Fedex.

There are different rules for obtaining police certificates from each country; some allow for other people to apply on your behalf within the country, some allow online application, some only allow applications with a request letter from CIC. As an American, you'll need an FBI certificate; to get it, you must be fingerprinted and sign the application form, no one else can do it on your behalf.

See here for instructions on getting the FBI certificate http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/criminal-history-summary-checks/submitting-a-criminal-history-summary-request-to-the-fbi

Hey Lbbkai,

Yes, you can do both the medicals and the fingerprints from inside Canada. My husband is American as well, and we just submitted our application while he is "visiting" and staying with me. Which city are you in?

That's great news. :) Should I call the local police station to ask about the fingerprinting or will they look at me funny if I just go there and ask them to do it for me? lol

I am in the Ottawa area, Thaliada.

We went to a police station and they said they don't do it there. They sent us to an independent agency - specialized in fingerprinting. They had all the forms necessary. My opinion is to call the police station or even go there if you want and see what happens. You won't know until you try :)

We got married on February 20th - here in Toronto - and the marriage certificate arrived on May 20th. You won't be able to submit your application without the marriage certificate. So, right after the marriage, we did the fingerprints and sent them to the States. Took about a month to receive the results - just a letter saying everything was ok.

After we got the marriage certificate we found the doctor in Toronto - from the panel of physicians - and it took a few hours to get everything done. We were lucky to make an appointment the following day.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions let me know (since I've done it recently, and I might be able to help) :)

Best of luck!

In general, because of timing of application, it's best to get everything started "at the right time". Police Checks needs to be received by CIC no later than 3 months after being issued. Depending on which province you're in, marriage certificate can take quite a while.
at the same time : medicals expire after a year, so you want to get them as close to the date you will be sending your application as possible.
It's usually fairly easy to book a medical appointment, so call one that is on the list and close to you, and enquire about their waiting time, so you can plan for that.
Good luck,
Sweden

That's one thing I didn't know, I assumed they would give us the Marriage Certificate after the ceremony. We aren't having a church wedding, we are planning on doing it at city hall. If it takes 6 weeks to get the certificate back we will probably have to get married sooner than I had intended.

Yes, we did it at the City Hall only too, not the religious one. It says on serviceontario that it takes about 10 weeks since the marriage ceremony. Sweden is right with everything she said as well.

Best of luck!
