After driving up from Portland with friends, I crossed into BC today at the Pacific Highway crossing. The entire process took 13 minutes (the officer actually timed it because he had to change posts at 6:00). It took us longer (around 30mins) to actually get up to the border because of Labour Day traffic. It was pretty simple; he asked for my passport, the CoPR paperwork and one copy of goods to follow and goods accompanying. Said the 2nd list was a waste of paper. (That being said, the excel file of goods to follow/goods accompanying that floats around this site worked well and he was rather impressed that it was organized. I highly suggest using it.)
He typed things into the computer, went over the CoPR document and had me sign & initial throughout, then he signed it. The lists of goods were stamped on each page, and he updated my address for the PR Card. He asked how much money I have available, but when I went to pull out the documentation he shrugged it off.
I specifically asked him about whether I would need to apply for a PRTD since I'm a US Citizen and he kinda shrugged and said "I'm suppose to tell you yes, but that really just creates extra work for us so..*laughs*." He told me to update my Nexus card with the Vancouver office and use it or my passport to enter. He also stamped the immigration visa in my passport for extra measure ("You don't need it, but having it will ensure no Officer will give you trouble if you cross via land before you get your PR Card.")
Overall it was a simple process. The agent was funny and didn't take anything too serious. He joked about me having my US passport in a Roots (a Canadian company) passport cover, and asked about what kind of doughnuts I had brought back from Portland.
