Hello everyone,

Quick question.. Can we apply for outland PR, while me and my husband are staying in USA and waiting for his usa green card? is it even possible to apply for residency in both countries simultaneously?

thank you

Provided you are a Canadian citizen - yes, you can do that. In order to be approved, you will have to include proof in your application that you plan to return to Canada and live here once the PR application is approved. That may be the tricky bit...

Thank you for your response. I'm US citizen and my husband is Canadian citizen. We were thinking for applying outland Canadian pr while waiting for his usa green card. but we were not sure if he has to physically live in Canada during the outland application. and what are the possible ways to prove that we will live in Canada if PR is approved. Any suggestions?

there are residency requirements for maintaining pr status. a senior member will be able to tell you what that is, i am still not 100%.

usually people submit letters from family members who are willing to help out upon returning to canada. It seems CIC wants a clear plan of what your intentions are when you return (ie: stay with family, rent/purchase a place in a certain community, look for jobs in x industry in x area, take x classes for professional certification, etc.) Basically you are looking to convince them you have a solid plan for relocation, want to be a contributing members of society, and do not intend to draw on welfare upon your return.

I am a Canadian Citizen living in the US with my US citizen husband. We applied Outland May 1 2014. I have had a Green Card for 5 yrs but will be relinquishing it when I return to Canada. The main reason is the IRS. A US citizen or Green Card holder has to file taxes with the IRS every year even if you are no longer a resident of the US (There are only two countries in the world that require this) There are new tax laws coming into effect and it would be a good idea to look into them. My husband will have to continue to file with the IRS. Of course the other issue is (and there has been much discussion about this) the ability to maintain both the green card and Canadian PR. Both cards are Permanent Residence cards with requirements and so technically you cannot be a resident of two countries at the same time
