I applied from the US for PR in Canada in February 2013. My wife was approved to sponsor me in March. About two weeks ago I received an email that said that the initial review of my application was complete and that they did not expect me to need an interview. They also asked me to email a copy of my Passport. I did so within a few days. I had originally sent a copy with my application as well.

I'm at the six month mark for my application and did not expect to hear from them until next year. Is this a very early stage assessment of my application or a finalization of it? Would they have already performed the background checks etc before asking for my passport?

Thanks!

Hi

It's hard to tell really but I think you should be getting an answer soon. Try to check online. A lot of people got their papers professed faster that thought.

Pasport2canada,

I'm in the same boat as you I applied in April and just received a request from CIC asking for a copy of my passport, I don't figure it would happen until next fall. Can you let me know if your paperwork has been finalized and if so how long it took?

Hi WashingtonGirl !!

You have said that u applied in April 2013. But, your profile/ signature says that, you applied on 11th May 2013. May i know the exact date/ timelines please ? I am asking this question, becoz ... i applied for my son on May 14th 2013 to the Mississauga office and it got transferred to the CPP-Ottawa office for further processing on the Jun 14th 2013. So far, there is no communication from them at all. My son's case is very very straight forward and there is no need for a background check and any other complexity. Even though he lives here in canada with me, i have applied for him as an outland applicant (as i am supposed to, per the guidelines). So, just wanted to check your exact timelines so as to assess my case. Thank You.

Please note, I have NOT provided/ mentioned my email address in the application so as to get a hard copy of the letter from them.

I assume that the Passport Request letter (once I get it from CPP-Ottawa) will help me in applying for the OHIP ( medical) card and there is no need for me to wait until the final stage/ closure of the application. Also, i assume that the passport request letter will say that your case has been approved. When I went to apply for the OHIP card (around 3 months back), the officer in the Service canada office wanted me to come to them as soon as i get a letter stating that my son's application has been approved. Please clarify. Thank You so much.

by the way, since my son was born in US, his case should be very very straight forward. This is my assumption.

Please advise me with your inputs/ thoughts/ clarifications. Thank You so much.

bye, Geo

The passport copy request is NOT an approval, and the letter won't say anything about being approved... it will just ask for your passport.
After that when they have finished processing the application the status will change to "Decision Made" on the eCAS online system, and then a few weeks after that you'll get the COPR letter in the mail that you can use for landing procedure.

Typically when you go to a Health Card office in Ontario, they will not start the 3-month wait until the PR has actually landed as a PR.
There is a way to get your 3-month countdown to start sooner, but usually it involves first getting a rejection of OHIP coverage from the regular office, and then taking that letter to the OHIP Eligibility Committee. http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/publications/ohip/review.aspx
They will communicate with the CPP-Ottawa office, to determine the status of your application and if you are really eligible for OHIP to begin.
