Option C still says I'm single even though I am married. Big problem or...?

I have a CRA online account. After I got married, I logged in and changed my marital status. I'm hoping this has the same result as filling out the RC65.
And they never badgered you about your spouse's SIN? They HOUNDED me for it. I finally got someone who told me to send my immigration package to them, I told her how much paper it was and she was like "I highly doubt that ma'am" Me:   So I sent it, three weeks later, it was all adjusted ::)

Wait a minute.....now another confusion arose... :p

So, I'm a Canadian citizen who's going to sponsor my Indonesian wife (we're hoping to mail our application package to Mississauga sometime next week). We're doing it outland, which means CPC-M will eventually forward the application to the Singapore VO.

We got married in October 2012.

Since we're just starting the sponsorship process now, OBVIOUSLY it will be a while until my wife gets her SIN number (because she has to get the PR in the first place (*crossing fingers, hoping it won't take long to happen*)

So....! If I update my marital status today (either by filling out RC65 or updating CRA MyAccount), are you guys saying that in a few weeks, CRA will request my wife's SIN number? Is that how it works?

But a few weeks from now, my wife won't have her SIN number yet...(heck she won't even be a Canadian permanent resident yet). So what do I tell the CRA then?
Should I just call their toll free number and inform them about the situation (i.e: that my wife's PR is still being processed) and tell them to wait until further notice from me then...??!

No, they didn't! I'll speak to my accountant before I file my 2012 taxes.

Most people seem to just fill in zeros and move on. If she has Canadian income, you can get her an ITN that is a specially formatted nine digit number that works similar to a SIN for CRA's purposes.

0 Canadian income, as she works in Indonesia.

So filling in zeroes is enough then? the CRA won't bother me and ask "why all zeroes"...?

So I've read from others who have done that. Feel free to attach a sheet and explain (assuming you don't file electronically.)

You can file still, just put 0's. I had an accountant who has done my taxes since I was 18, so he just put in that I'm married and they immediately jumped on me trying to get his SIN. I don't think they understood why my accountant put my husband on my sheet (duh, cuz he's my HUSBAND) and that he was American. I talked to 4 or 5 people from CRA in one week, I hated them for a month with a PASSSSSSSSSSSION. But now that hubby has a SIN I just had to send them a letter.

If you send them a letter attachment, and sign it, stating your wife is a citizen of such and such country and that you've applied for PR but she's in her home country, they usually let it go. This is what a friend of mine did.

Thanks for the insights parker24! :)

Is writing the CRA the only way to tell them about my wife's situation? I guess I can't really inform them online through CRA MyAccount, can I....I mean, CRA MyAccount does let us change the marital status, but I don't think it has a form in which we can write extra information about my wife's PR application and whatnots....

What about calling the CRA's 1-800 number to tell them about this?

You can call, but they are going to tell you they need something in writing, so that they can put it in your "file". It scared me that they had a file of me O_O (But in hindsight, I understood haha)

Hi everyone...

Just a little update, which I think you all will find useful, in case you have doubts about updating the marital status ;)

So I just updated my marital status a few minutes ago using CRA MyAccount, and apparently the update page asked whether my spouse is a resident of Canada, to which I said no. And then on the page that came up next, it asked me to submit her first name ONLY, and that's it...the next page said that my marital status got updated successfully.

Then I called the CRA to ask what I should do next. Pretty simple.....the CRA agent said that once my wife does become a PR, acquires a SIN number, and files her first T1, she should then put her SIN number, and list me as her spouse, along with my SIN number. That way the CRA will be able to "connect the dots" (i.e.: discover our linkage/marriage).

Hope that helps... ;)

Thank you for sharing! That seems very simple!
