My husband who is sponsoring me is a stay at home dad. Therefore, he has no income to report on a tax return. We live in Canada (I am on a work permit). He called CRA and ordered an Option C printout and they gave him a hard time saying there wasn't one if there was no return. He asked them to just send whatever they could. He got something saying "No Assessment Information Found for 2008."

Is this going to be an issue? Has anyone submitted something like this and gotten pushback?

Thanks

Did he file any taxes prior to 2008? They want to establish he wasnt in receipt of social assistance. You could include what was given and a letter explaining. Sometimes even if you had no income you would complete a tax return to receive a refund or to apply for Child Benefits. You do get credits from rent or property tax etc.. perhaps he did so in a previous year and he could include his Notice of Assessment from them. Hope that helps :)

He has been a stay at home dad since we have lived here. As a family, we have high income, so we don't qualify for income based child benefits or other credits. He claims the UCCB, which everyone gets regardless of income, but that is only $1,200/year, so he isn't required to file a tax return to report it. He is a university and law school graduate and could work if he wanted to, but we made the decision to have a parent home to raise the kids.

Hmm so I think the best case for you is to include that and an explanation as such. The main point as I have said about the Option C Printout is to establish that he hasnt received social assistance. Good luck :)

Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
You know, everyone who is a resident of Canada and is over the age of 18 is required to file taxes whether they are working or not. He needs to file his taxes for all the years he missed. This won't hurt you as far as immigration is concerned but still a smart thing to do.

Actually, I believe that you are not required to file if you have no tax. Thus, if someone has income below the basic personal amount, I think that no return should be required. You are permitted to file, but not required to.

Should I File My Taxes if I Have No Income?

If you are not working and have no other income in Canada you may still be required to complete tax forms, it can allow you to:

claim a refund;
apply for the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax credit;
claim tuition fees, education and textbook amounts, and transfer or carry forward in a future year any unused amounts;
claim interest paid on student loans; and/or
apply for direct deposit.
You may also wish to claim your “education amount” (a deduction based on the tuition you pay in Canada), which can be a benefit to you if you are employed in Canada in the future.
