Hi Folks,

I need your kind opinion about couple of queries stated below, especially from those who hv already landed and are from telecom or project management background.....

about myself....I'm a telecom professional with 6 years of experience with a PMP certification as well......

i've heard a lot that once one lands in canada, canadian qualification or canadian work experience is required/preferred for jobs. Then few of my friends told me that in telecom field, sometimes they can hire you without any of these, if your experience is wht they need....
1): is it true or just a story ??? ...

2): moreover...... for a new landed immigrant, how helpful can a PMP certification be if one has a foreign qualification & foreign work experience ? or still one needs to acquire suitable candian qualification for finding a job in his/her own field ?

Thanks in anticipation !

Cheers !
Inam

maybe it has something to do with your questions that nobody has answered yet.
why do you think the telco business is completely different from other hightech industries?
in regards to your questions:
Are there new immigrants that found a job shortly after landing in decent positions without canadian experience? Yes
Does this automatically mean that this will be the same in your case: No
Finding a job is pretty much a mixture of expertise, work experience, reputation of former employers, education (major and institution), networking, application strategy, resume, geography, timing and - of course - luck.

In regards to PMP: PMP is a standard certification and many PMs in Canada are PMP certified. So does it help you to find a job: Yes, certainly. Is it a guarantee that you'll get a job being PMP certified? Certainly No.

I agree, with ClubCanada. Your PMP designation will definitely add alot value to your job applications, but it won't be a guarantee.

Each company is different, some rely more heavily on local business experience, others will be more lenient. So like any job seeker you will experience a number of NO's and Thank -you's, before you get a YES.

Job seeking is a true test in patience, and resilience.

Great thread; I too am looking for a job in the telecom sector. I am already landed. I notice the number of telecom companies in canada are really few; my plan is to apply for telecom jobs but also have IT as a back up (you can never go wrong with IT Support/ service desk and they have good rates if its unionized too) - but that is just a back up.

I find that the major difficulty getting a telecom job is that the jobs are too specialized often times and may not fit each individual background; what do you think???

You're correct that Canada has large, but few Telecom companies. There are some smaller ones that only deal with mobile (cell) phones, but we don't have as many as the US.

You'll also find that many of the Telecom companies have diversified and have divisions in Cable (TV) and Mobile (Cell), so maybe these are other possibilities?
