Opening Bank Account in Ontario?

Hello.

I'm a Canadian resident. My wife is American. She does live here in Ontario.

Banks and credit unions around here say you have to be a Canadian resident with a Social Insurance Number to open an account now either as single account for her or joint account for us?

Has anyone recently opened a single, or joint bank account?

We are North of Toronto but wondering if maybe should try banks in Toronto?

Yep, opened one yesterday with Scotiabank. Just a standard Checking account but they didn't require an SIN, just passport with COPR and Driver's License. The temp DL even worked for them as long as I had the passport photo.
