Hello,

I was granted an open work permit (for 8 months) back in 2016 through my spouse. He went to Canada in August to work, but I did not for personal reasons. Now I would like to join him and find work during the time my work permit is still valid.

My POE letter says: "You must seek entry to Canada to obtain your work permit by 2017/04/30"; does this mean my open work permit is valid until the end of April? Can I extend my work permit and stay in Canada for work even after that date and can I do that even if my spouse returns back to our home country?

Thank you very much.

1. No, it means your TRV is valid for entry up to April 30th. You would only be issued a work permit up to the end date of your spouse's work permit.

Thank you for your reply.

What would the best course of action be in my situation so that I can stay in Canada to work? Should I extend my TRV? Would then my open work permit be automatically extended as well or does everything rely on my spouse staying in Canada?
