Open Work Permit Wait Time?

Hello all!

Alright. So my partner and I have applied for Outland permanent residency and included his Open Work permit along with it. We are both currently in Australia (I’m Canadian, he’s Aussie) We received a message from the postal service saying it was delivered two weeks ago. We haven’t heard anything yet, and I understand it takes a while to receive AOR for residency...but what about the work permit?!

I was planning on moving back to Canada October 1st, my partner coming a month or so later while he finishes up a work contract in Aus. We were under the impression that a work permit would only take 5-6 weeks to approve. However, after reading several messages in these forums, etc. We are absolutely panicking.

Does anyone know how long a work permit will take to approve? Or even receive confirmation that they are processing it? Desperate for info as this will determine me putting a down payment on an apartment in the next few days. We obviously don’t want to be apart for six months :(

Thanks

There’s no open work permit with Outland sponsorship. The OWP is going to be refused. You need to apply inland if you want the wprk permit. Processing time is 2 to 4 months. You must both be in Canada to submit an inland app.

How old is your partner? Canada recently changed the IEC rules for Australians, allowing those up to age 35 to apply. This one can be done online, completely separate to your outland app, and is the one that gives the 6-8 week time frame for processing. When I did my first one, it arrived in 5 weeks.

This may allow your partner to come and work while your outland app is processed. Be aware though, Outland may require an interview in Australia for your application.

Hi,

Yes we realized that yesterday- we are withdrawing our application today and reapplying from inside Canada in the next few months. The wait time is apparently slightly longer, but that’s no worries to us. Thanks again for your help

Hi,

My partner is only thirty-two but unfortunately he has already had four working holiday visas in Canada and they’ve recently changed the law to only allow one. We’ve decided to immediately withdraw our application and apply inland in the coming months. Thanks for your help!

I suggest you just leave the outland app in process. You won't be able to apply inland until November and the OWP takes 3-4 months, so it will be March-April before he can work. An outland app has a good chance of being completely done by then.
