My wife will receive an open work permit that is tied to my work permit. In Texas, she is a first grade teacher and hopes to find a teaching job in Calgary. Are there any known restrictions to use her open work permit as a teacher? She is currently applying for her Canadian teaching certificate.

I would recommend she have a back up plan. Canada has an oversupply of teachers and jobs are typically hard to come by. Also in order to work with children, she will have to take a medical and change the conditions of her work permit to remove the restriction preventing her from working with kids.

Just to add, I'm not sure about Alberta, but I know that in a few other provinces teaching positions for this September are being sorted out now. If she want to be teaching this September, she should start applying now.

We were going to travel in two weeks to get our work permit and she will not have had a medical exams before then. Is it difficult to have the restriction removed after the fact when she completes the exam?

Unfortunately, the timing of my relocation isn't ideal for her. Even if she were able to substitute the first year that would be helpful for her to get acclimated.

Once she's in Canada, she can take the medical. She should then wait three weeks for the medical to be processed and will then have to travel to a US/Canada land border to have the restriction removed off her work permit.

I hate to say it, but in many areas even substitute teaching positions aren't that easy to come by. Having said that, hope things work out for her.
