Hello Guys,
I have questions about open work permit. Since my wife is planning for student visa, I will be landing in Canada on open work permit.

1. Can open work permit be transferred to closed work permit by an employer once I am offered a job?
2. Can I apply for PR based on open work permit?
3. My wife will be attending 1 yr post graduation 3D animation program. will she able to get 1 yr or 3 yrs open work permit after her student visa finished? I read that to get 3 yrs open work permit as in international student, you need to have minimum 2 yrs of study.
4. Can I extend my open work permit based on the fact that spouse will get OWP after her study?

Please let me know.

1. Yes, if your employer gets an LMO for you, then you can apply for a close work permit.
2. Possibly. If you want to apply under PNP with employer sponsorship, you would have to ask the PNP in your province.
3. She gets 1 year.
4. If your wife gets a job in a skilled occupation, then you can continue with an open work permit as her spouse.

Thank Leon for the insight.

Hi Leon,
I was just reading other similar cases like me here and found one where you replied that if applicant is already post grad when she applies for student visa then spouse wont get open work permit? is this true?

Let me tell you more clearly about my case. My wife is Masters in IT (5 yrs course). further more she has done 1 yr multimedia certificate course. Now she plans to do 1 yr 3D animation specialization course which can be post grad course or certificate course or even can be Diploma in Canada.

I am an electronics engineer (4 yr degree) by qualification.

so in this case I will be able to get an open work permit?
Also, Should we file for both visa together or once she gets her study visa then I should file mine? I read that if we file differently then chances are that OWP can get rejected?

Please help me clear my above confusion. Many thanks

I haven't heard the thing about the post grad. As far as I know, a student is a student.

If you apply together, the visa officer would be encouraged to see you as a unit and either approve or deny both. If you apply separately, it could happen that your wife gets her study visa but you could be refused.

Ahhh, that clears my doubt. Thank buddy. You are awesome source of information. Keep Rocking.
