I won't land until months later (no COPR yet) and will be visiting Canada next month. Can I open a bank account without PR? Just thinking if it'll be easier to send money in prior to landing later.

Will there be any tax implications on income I'll earn?

Sure, you can open account without PR. But you can also do so at HSBC before you leave HK for Canada.

Do you have the Electronic travel authorization (eta) yet?

Yes, have eTA though it won't be required when I visit.

HSBC HK charges CAD200 to open a bank account in Canada. Therefore, I'm wondering if I can open an account this upcoming trip to save the fee. Do you know if I'll be considered "deemed resident" with a bank account in Canada? I will not transfer my savings into Canada until shortly before landing (next Mar/Apr).

Opened a non-resident bank account at HSBC in Canada, plan to move to BC less than 6 months. Attempt to open a HSBC account in HK so that I can transfer money cheaper to Canada using it's global network. However, I was told the account in HK needs to be at least 6 months old to be able to do any money transfer. Anyone has any experience? It seems weird!

Perhaps new policy? Make sure you transfer money in HSBC global view so that you can enjoy free and instant wire transfer between HK and Canada bank accounts.

It used to be free to open a HSBC Canada account in HK.

I'm waiting right now for HSBC to get back to me in HK to do exactly this, I'll ask them the questions and let you know

I'm not 100% sure but I believe Premier a/c is free but normal accounts they charge for opening.

for the OP, I tried to open an account here before I was PR and they said I couldn't unless it was for a specific reason.

I successfully opened HSBC account from overseas, as a brand new HSBC client. Full procedure took some time (several weeks) but I got all setup, including online banking and debit card before moving to Canada. Did not use their money transfer service though, due to the miserable rates(as all banks offer), but specialized online forex services.
Still with them after landing; despite their abhorrent customer (dis)service, their rates and stuff are really good for Premier customers...

haha their service for premier clients is shocking as well so don't feel left out

I'm still waiting for them to get back to me on a time to go in and open an account. I don't want to use my own relationship manager as he's a muppet

It's been almost a week and I still haven't heard any reply from the local branch. I've never banked with HSBC and now I understand why it's shares has been in distress for months.

For newcomer top banks have promotional offers to open free checking account but only for 6-12 months. Tangerine Bank is exceptional. open tangerine account by using orange key and get $50 bonus instead of $25 offer in tangerine site on first deposit $100 minimum. Orange Key is 47191093S1 is stil valid use it during enrollment. Also get $75 bonus for payroll deposit. I am using tangerine and enjoying unlimited free banking freedom!

Does one need the PR card and a secure online login key (at another bank) to open a bank account at Tangerine?
