I am doing some research before travelling to Canada and I found these links useful:

http://www.muchmormagazine.com/2010/01/youve-just-landed-in-canada-now-what/

Through an HDFC Bank branch in India or a Scotiabank branch in India, new immigrants and foreign students can now complete a Scotiabank Referral Form to open a bank account, send money and apply for a VISA credit card, (if applicable) before they move to Canada.

All The Best!

Hi All,
I opened an account each for me & my wife at Scotiabank Barakhamba road, New Delhi. Very friendly service, took less than 20 min and everything was done by the bank representative.
We opened two accounts because we get 2 different credit cards with $1000 limit each.
Welcome pack will reach my place within 2 weeks and I just need to deposit a cheque/wire transfer before I fly in Aug.

Hi canpuneet, have you landed in canada already? I am planning to open a Scotia bank account before do the landing.

The statement or the document from Scotia bank is a valid document to show as a proof of funds in the POE? I checked with the bank but they can't comment on this as their knowledge is very limited on this.

Please let me know on priority.

Regards

Hi Canpuneet,

Can I understand that, we don't need to deposit any money at the time of account opening?

Hi Canpuneet,

Very nice and valuable information. We will have our credit card before landing in canada. Wonderful!

You do not need to deposit any cash to open the account.
My account was opened and I have received my welcome kit with account no. All that I need to do is, wire transfer 1 payment (only 1 allowed from home country) before I travel. The statement from a Canadian bank acts as a valid POF.

Just to clarify that it is not a must that I wire transfer any money before I travel. If I want I can still carry my money as cash, DD etc.

Cheers.

This bank has very less branches, only advantage of this bank is there that its loan rate is lower than others. TD Bank is virtually everywhere.

The advantage though is that you have an account and a credit card before you travel- saves you time.
You do not have to "physically" carry cash & DDs.
No account maintenance and banking charges for 1 year.

Choice is personal ofcourse.

Hi Canpuneet,

Good info.

I came across, this Hello Canada from ICICI bank. : http://www.icicibank.ca/faqs/newcomers.htm#1
http://www.icicibank.com/aboutus/pdf/Canada%20_newcomers-23-8.pdf

But I like the Scotia Bank Option - atleast for the credit-card.

that's awesome canpuneet, I was looking for this response (can be shown as POF @ POE) for quite a long time. I'll rush to bank this weekend and have it opened. What are the charges/fees to open this account? Finally, have you shown this as POF?

Congratulations on you getting your job... I would love to hear from you more on your Job as I am also part of Transition management and definitely it would help me.

Regards,

Good luck buddy. There is zero charge for opening the account.
In fact we opened 2 accounts (1 for my wife), so we get two credit cards.

I have not landed yet, I am travelling only in late September.
