Hi everyone,

I recently sponsored my husband who received his PR in July. We also had our first newborn baby in July. It turns out that she requires a lip and tongue tie release as she is unable to breastfeed efficiently, causing me lots of pain. This is considered an oral surgery under dental services. We considered adding her to my husband's university health insurance plan, but it only covers 10% which is about 75 dollars. That's about another 700 dollars we'll have to pay out of pocket which is hard for us to afford right now. We will if we have to, but I am wondering whether we are able to get government financial subsidy (Healthy Smiles Ontario) or are we ineligible due to the sponsorship agreement? I wasn't sure since I know we can't (and don't want to) get monthly social assistance, but I wasn't sure if it also includes other forms of support like Healthy Smiles.

Thanks for your help.

Sponsorship doesn't make you ineligible. Apply and see if your child is eligible.

Sounds like this is just a tongue tie. Most of these programs will come with significant wait times. Just to hear whether you qualify would take 6 weeks probably. By that time you would have likely stopped breastfeeding. Do you have a breast pump? Have you considered pumping and feeding your baby?

Don’t think that solving a tongue tie would be covered under healthy smiles. It is usually basic care like cleaning and cavity filling. The wait time will likely be quite long. Not sure if your family would also have coverage since you do have access to a dental plan under the university plan. Also your husband has chosen to go to school and is not working full-time.

Seems like this is for much more significant deformities. A tongue tie can be solved in a minute with a laser or a pair of scissors. Feels like it is unlikely for this to be covered by this program.
I quickly read the post and saw cleft lip. Should have read it more carefully. You’re correct, this program is for cleft lip and palate.
