Dear Colleagues:

I can't find this anywhere on the forums. Basically I'm from the UK and have come over to Canada with my family on a permanent resident visa last month. I still will have to go back to the UK 1-2 months a year for work where I will have to drive.

I went to the Driving Licence place in Ontario to apply for the test but they were confused when I explained that I still will need my UK licence for work and did not know how to advise me. One lady said that I can do the Canadian test but the other one said I must surrender my driving licence card and said that I'll go to gaol if I don't! Seriously! I wanted to start laughing but I just bit my tongue.

I couldn't get find the info I needed on their website. All I see is info on how to trade in your licence.

Has anyone kept their UK licence coming to Canada? And am I going to gaol?

Regards,

PD

Hi my family came from the UK to Ontario, what you are required to do is exchange your UK licence for Canadian all you need to do at the time is the eye test. When you want to go back to the UK you will then need to go back and exchange again your Canadian license for your UK. Hope this help.

Apply for a brand new Ontario license (if you keep it for the UK without self-declaring), or for a replacement UK license (if you surrender yours for Ontario), whichever is easier.

1. DVLA in will be informed that the OP has surrendered license
2. It is illegal in Canada to have 2 valid DLS.
3. Why can't s/he use his/her Ontario DL in the UK, lots due.
