King80,
Yes, You have to declare your funds at the port of entry if it exceeds $10,000 .
Here are my thoughts on transferring your funds from US.

Open a bank account in Canada and DONT close your US bank Account for atleast couple of months. Before you open your Canadian Bank Account, research for the tie up/ network that your US bank has with the canadian bank. (For eg. Bank of america has tie up with scotia bank, one of the benefit of the tie up is if you withdraw money from Scotia Bank in Canada using Bank of America Debit Card, you will not be charged for the transaction fees.)

Open a bank account in Canada

1. Deposit a personal US check in the canadian bank account. It might take couple of weeks for the amount to be credited.
2. Take a cashier check (SELF) from US bank ( if allowed) and deposit the same in your canadian account. ( Check for the time it takes for the amount to be credited).
3. Do an online transfer of funds from your US bank account t0 Canadian Bank account.
4. Avoid traveller Checks - There are lot of charges involved in it - Processing fee, exchange rate difference etc.

These are my thoughts and may not be the best ones.

Friends - Can you shed more light on the topic and share your thoughts and experiences.

Thanks

Hi Guys,

I have a question regarding tranferering funds to Canada when we land/move to Canada.

Do we also declare the funds we are carrying while we land?

Also, what is the best method to transfer/take your funds to Canada?

As always, thanks for your help.

I got my PPR this morning... YAYY

Has anybody gone in person to the Buffalo center for the visa issuance? If so do I need to schedule an appointment with them before going there. Do they return the passports on the same day?

Would really appreciate anyone's help on this.

All right,
Congrats and thanks for breaking the silence of the past few days. We need some more noise here. Anyone with passport returns or PPRs. Let us keep the hopes alive.

Here Calgary2010 did it in person, I am quoting him below in green and I will add, from his/her and some other experiences, that you do it in person if you don't have the patience to get your passport back quickly enough, because it definitely seems to be taking 3-4 week minimum from Buffalo to get your passport back. Mine will be 3 weeks soon.

Dear All - I got mine and dependents passports stamped with Visa and collected COPR docs in person yesterday. got a bid at priceline for cheaper tickets, hotel & car to Buffalo, thought in person would clear lot indirect question if the primary applicant is before them.

Reached HSBC center, you need to provide your passport and they will give you a sticker which you need to show all the time till your departure from CIC. In all the lifts there is red Maple leaf button which will take you to 30 th floow, Person who recieves you will collect your switched off mobile phone. I stood in Queue after 5 people. I have submitted the four items : Passports, photoes and Email sent by CIC, Buffalo. I forgot to give Money orders ( RPRF), I was just checking the file again and found that, quickly went back and given the MO's. She said she was sorry and really forgot to collect the RPRF (8.30 AM). They were calling numbers, mine came at 10.20, It took that long only becoz I have 4 passports , people with one passports got it still earlier. Validated the COPR for all the details accuracy and dispersed from the embassy. I have submitted the US visa photoes that we have taken recently, they have cut into the 35mm & 45mm and pasted them on COPR docs and returned the second copy.
Loaded 'Niagara Falls' address in GPS and rushed to the see the world wonder, caught the evening flight for back home. Shoot questions if you have any that I did not mention in the Buffalo stamping expereince.

1. I did that for one passport, rest were new passports.
2. I used the same specs.
3. I wrote one stating eye colour and height.
4. You cannot use fedex for receiving passports and can use for sending.
Things to be send to Buffalo
1. Passports
2. Photos
3. Letter stating height and eye colour.
4. Prepaid USPS envelope.
5. Copy of ppr mail.

Hi,

I did my passport stamping in person. I got there on Tuesday morning at 7:10am and was out with HSBC center with stamped passport at 9:15am.
No appointment needed.

Thanks,
L.B

Ell.Bee,

Would you suggest going earlier than 7:10am?

You can go there around 7am, I wouldnt recommend any earlier as you have to unecessarily wait downstairs. The officer comes arounds 7:30am and takes you to the upper floor. There is not much rush at around 7:00am. When I got there at 7:10am there around 8-10 people already, even then I got my passport back at 9:15am.

Thanks,
L.B
