I have done my medicals on 5th Aug 2010. When I went to NY consulate and talked to Visa Officer, he told me that they have asked Canada office (I don't know what office) to provide extension to my medicals. That will provide more time to them and to me to do landing. (This was the reason they only asked for RPRF and not passport in the email they sent me a day before I went there.) However, I told them that my wife has exam scheduled in canada in mid July and I do not want to get visitors visa at this point of time. I showed him exam appointment letter also. Because of this, I was able to submit our passports and RPRF at that time and hopefully I will have passports back before the exam.
Even though I sent them several emails in the past, they never bothered to let me know in email that they will be able to give me extension of medicals. They only told me that when I visited in person.
Also, I would like to mention that people are not allowed to go to consulate just to check status of application or anything like that. Security at the gate would not allow anyone in the consulate without proper written authorization. I applied for visitors visa for my mother in law and they allowed me to go inside consulate to pick up her passport. After I picked her passport at the window, I explained my PR situation to the lady at the window and she asked me to take a seat and then some other visa officer called me separately to talk about it.

I am landing in Calgary on 06/22/2011 and returning back to USA (via Buffalo border) on 06/25/2011. Please let me know if anybody is coming from Toronto to Buffalo(i.e: Road) on 06/25/2011 so that I will share expenditures.

i am planning to do landing formality this month and come back to USA. But my H1b and wife's H4 has expired. Can i use my AVR through Toronto airport?
is there any trouble with that? Will you ever get rejected to come back to USA with expired visa?
please advise, i am a little worried.

Hi,

I think you can safely use AVR as long as you have valid and same category type. I mean h1b with extension and h4 extension for your wife.

Same Category is not necessary. I'm telling you from personal experience.

I am unable to reply to a private message from KKumar about my reentry into USA. I am posting the experience here. I hope he reads it.
I have a valid H1 stamped in my PP. My reentry into USA was smoothest ever. The USA immigration counters were at Calgary airport itself. There was an area marked as US territory, we entered the area and there was hardly anyone waiting in line. We immediately went to a counter. The officer asked what the purpose of our visit to USA was. I replied that I worked in SFO. 'O I see', and took the I94s from my hand. Examined the visas. Stamp, stamp, stamp 'have a nice trip'. So that was it. Hope this helps.
I have received my SIN and health cards since then. I am still waiting on my PR cards. The PR card timeline has changed from 30 to 34 to 33 and now 40 days. I called up the call center and the lady there told me the cards still show in process. Probably there is no point in calling before 40 days now.

No i was not denied entry to USA. You can use AVR even if you have different category expired visa stamped and you use current status to validate your AVR entry.
