Hi Everyone!

I have 2 friends who come to visit. Their plan was to stay in Canada for 3 months. But, when they arrived at the airport, the officer stamped their passport and only gave them 1 month to stay in Canada. In addition, they received a paper that they have to present to an immigration officer when they leave Canada. Question: Is there something that can be done to extend their stay? I know you can extend your stay while inside Canada if you apply 30 days before your status expires, but since they were only given 30 days and they did not do the application to extend their stay on the first day they got here, I don't think it would work....

Hi

There is no requirement to apply 30 days beforehand; that is a suggestion. They can apply for an extension up until their status expires.

Were your friends given any reason for just a 1 month stay as must have created some doubts either about intentions/purpose of visit or financial support especially with having to report departure.

That's is great! I was under the impression that was a mandatory requirement. Good to know it isn't.
Thank you for your help!

Basically the officer said he wasn't sure that they had enough reasons to go back to their home country after their vacation is over...

that probably wont change even with an extension application given they have a departure document issued but who knows worth a try nobody on the forum can say one way or other, good luck hope you get a response before the one month is up.

They were issued with Visitor Records, not departure documents. Different things. As far as I know, Visitor Records issued by CBSA always say that the person must return the document to CBSA prior to departure to prove they have complied.

Yes, the documents they have are Visitor Records.
