One way ticket

I'm sorry I don't really know where to post this but I hope you can advise me on this.

I'm a PR (date of entry: May 9, 2012) planning to return to the Philippines this coming January. I am intending to stay there for about 6 months at most while waiting for my boyfriend to finish his financial obligations, and then we can get married.

Seeing as I don't really have a set date of return here to Canada, I purchased a one way ticket but the travel agency informed me that they cannot sell me the ticket yet because I might have an issue with the Philippine consulate about returning here. I'd be questioned as such why I'm going to the Philippines on a one way ticket. Presumably, she was assuming that I might not be able to return here within three years thus revoking my PR status (of course they are not to be held liable if such matters arise). She advised me to contact the Philippine consulate here in the city to ask if this is allowed and would not jeopardize my PR status.

What should I do? Should I just set a return date if ever?

Are you Filipina?

If so, I would tell the travel agent to stop worrying about my country of nationality and do her damned job. Get/sell me the package I wish to have.

The only way I can assume you would have a problem with the Philippine Consulate or POE would be if you are NOT Filipina and you require a visit visa to enter their country. Again, though, I see no reason why this travel agent should concern themselves with your travel plans.

I do wish to know though, why would you even use a travel agent to book a one way flight to just stay with your boyfriend in the Philippines. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just use one of the online reservation sites available or even just to phone the airlines directly to book?

Unless the ticket agent works for CBSA/ CIC and has internal knowledge of legal changes in the pipeline I would suggest you politely thank her for advise, ignore it and purchase a ticket that suits your travel plans. If she is insistent on her advise you can always take your business elsewhere. Philippines Bureau of Immigration won't sweat your 1 way ticket at entry as you are a citizen and CBSA when you return to Canada won't care about your ticket they will want to see your PR Card and ask how long you've been out of Canada. You have until May 2017 to meet your RO so time is on your side.

Can't you buy a return ticket and leave the return date "open"? This way you can inform the airlines your return date if known.

even with a canadian PR you are a still Citizen of Philippines (I suppose) and hence the POE at Philippines should not give you any trouble...I am thinking the travel agent is trying to make some more business from you..

Exactly. You can stay in the Philippines indefinitely as it is your country of citizenship. The agent is trying to make some money :)

Cent per cent agree with Msafiri.
Traveling with one way or return ticket is only your concern. CBSA has nothing to do with it.

Thank you so much for your help guys!

The travel agent called back a day after but I haven't contacted the Philippine consulate yet so I just informed her that I will be canceling my travel plans for the meantime. (She asked if I was still interested in booking my flight.) She seemed to have realized her mistake in postponing my confirmation of my reservation haha

And yes I'm still a Filipino citizen. :) whew she made me worry for nothing

One more question. Should I worry about filing my tax return while I'm out of the country? What do I do? Do I have to file it before leaving the country? (I'm planning to leave late January to early February) Can a relative file for my behalf, provided I leave the necessary documents like the T4?
