One way or round trip ticket from Japan?

Hello all.

I am planning to come back to Canada with my wife. I will stay and find work, she will wait out her PR applcation and check out life in Canada etc as a tourist. We made an application from overseas and have a UIC number and receipt, however in the email from CIC I was asked for additional info and one more form which I mistakenly thought we didnt need and intentionally left out. I have since sent the form and info as instructed but not received a second reply as of yet.

This is my situation.

Should she get a one way ticket or round trip?
Either is fine really but if the one way is cheaper can she buy it?

Yes, if she has all the papers ready like confirmation of permanent residence
it will be fine one way ticket...
But if the plan is to take her as a tourist then Immigration will require that she has
return ticket... If she has not return ticket she may be refuse entry to Canada...

and normally no airline will sell one way ticket to a non resident ... because if the entry
is denied she will need to use the ticket back to Japan....

She can travel on a one way ticket. When my partner and I returned, I had also bought a fully refundable one way ticket back for my partner just in case. The border officer never even asked about it; he simply verified that we had a PR app in the system, asked how much money we had, told my partner not to work and sent us on our way.

I came to Canada (from Japan) in March, right after we got stage 1 approval. However, at the time I still didn't have the actual letter saying we got sponsorship approval so I didn't have that paper with me. I did have copies of receipts of having paid the fees so that I could show we applied for PR.

Anyway - I got a one way ticket (Air Canada) and bought a fully refundable business class ticket for the return flight. (or maybe it was flex class? the full fare economy one which costs almost as much as a business class). The ticket cost five or six thousand dollars (I think) but I refunded my business class ticket after I arrived in Canada.

I had a print out of the ticket back to Japan, but the officer did not ask to see it. When she asked how long I am staying, I gave the date of my return flight, which was in five months' time. I said I was visiting my husband. I didn't mention we had applied for PR, and she didn't ask. She asked how much money I had (over 10000CAD) and she told me to make sure to go through the red channel in customs. That was it, I think.



Also, you might know this already, but just mentioning this because my husband and I didn't know this until recently and we would have liked to have known earlier:

If your wife has a valid Japanese license (and has had one for more than 2 years) she can go to the Japanese consulate in her province or area and ask for a certificate. This certificate should allow her to get a provincial drivers' license with only an eye test. (Each province might have different rules, but in Ontario you don't need PR to get a driver's license, and I've heard BC is the same.) Note: the Japanese consulates require the applicant to bring his/her Japanese driver's license and passport to the consulate him/herself - I called Ottawa and Toronto and they both said sorry, you have to come in person. (I live in Thunder Bay.) Eventually I called the Toronto consulate again and I happened to get another person on the phone who thought about it a bit and said as an exception I can mail in my documents. I did, and they sent back my documents yesterday Hopefully this means I can drive from next week, because I've been house-bound the whole time! (I have an international driver's license but while I can drive a rented vehicle, my husband's car insurance required that I have an Ontario license.)

You can try doing it with a one way ticket. As the other posters said, you'll probably be okay, but you would be much smarter to enter on a return ticket. If you get a CBSA officer who does inquire as to how she plans on returning to Japan, you'll be hard pressed to answer his question. If the CBSA officer refuses her entry because she can't show the means to return home, you'll feel awfully foolish that you tried to save yourself a couple hundred bucks.

In addition, I don't know what the situation in Japan, but in some countries the airlines won't let you travel on a one way ticket to a foreign country.

Just to close up this topic and for further reference

Bought a one-way Air Canada ticket for my wife and I.
Advised by travel agent we may have problems boarding.
But, no problems at Narita Airport when checking in at Air Canada counter, Terminal 1. (boarded together)
No issues with CBSA upon landing at Toronto Pearson, but had to go to the secondary immigration office located to the right of the main gates for further processing.
Received 6 month visitor permit at secondary processing office.

So, for those unsure about 1-way tickets, Air Canada doesn't seem to be too strict about this.

I am korean and had no problem coming to canada with one way ticket. Just be honest and say you are here to see your spouse.
