OINP - Cash Draft Invalid after 6 months ?

Hello Everyone!

Looking for help from the experts on here. I was just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation and what the best form of action would be.

Backstory: I sent in my OOPNP application late July, then in October I received the application package back due to some documents not being scanned clearly. I returned the application by the end of October with all the required information. OINP let me know via email that they received the package 2 weeks later. Late January I received an acknowledgement of my application and they even sent me a Processing Fee receipt.

Flash forward to today, I receive an email from OINP saying that they cannot process my cash draft as it is more than 6 months old and I have to send them a new bank draft within 30 days for them to process my application. I checked with my bank on this and their response is that they don't issue cash drafts with an expiration date, they even checked in their system and confirmed that the funds are still active and no attempts were made to cash the draft.

I replied to OINP stating all of this, but I think it'll be 15 days till I get a response.

My question is, does anyone have a contact number/email address of someone who can look into this. Or, if this still happens to be an issue and OINP aren't willing to cash the draft, how can I go about reissuing a valid draft ?

I'm just lost as I'm unable to understand how did they issue me a receipt before even cashing my draft ? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

In my opinion, it sounds like when OINP tried to cash the draft, it was initially accepted at the bank (hence the receipt you got), but a few weeks later, the bank contacted OINP again and said there was a problem with retrieving the funds.
Maybe you can get your bank to cancel the old draft and issue you a fresh draft? As far as I know, international bank drafts should be valid for no more than 6 months...and if it wasn't encashed in 6 months, it should have been refunded to your account.
Verify as well if the draft is drawn against a Canadian bank.

Thanks for your response bellaluna, the draft is from a Canadian bank, it isn't from an international bank. They clearly stated that the funds are available and no attempts to cash the draft was made. Hence the confusion. The bank even stated that they don't issue bank drafts that expire.

Oh dear, then this isn't the first time I've heard OINP making a bad call on a perfectly valid bank draft. I hope for your sake they see the reason in your case. Hope it works out.

Yeah it just seems strange that they would claim something before even trying to process the draft. I can understand if they did that and are saying this, but that isn't the case. Any clue on how the issues you have come across in the past have been resolved ? Just so that I have some direction on this while I wait for a response from OINP.

That case was, OINP claimed it was a personal cheque when in fact it was a valid international bank draft. They simply wrote to OINP again to reconsider (including a picture of a draft), then OINP agreed to accept it.

Perhaps whoever checked your draft automatically assumed it was an international draft that expires in 6 months.

In my case, OINP sent me a scanned attachment of my bank draft and said that it's more than 6 months old so it's invalid. Hopefully this gets resolved soon, instead of having to wait 15 days for a response.
