Hello ,

my daughter came to Canada ( Ontario ) 1 year ago - we are still waiting for her PR which is expected in 1 month after which she will get her Ontario Health card . the rest of my family are residents of Ontario for more than a year and we all have health cards .
fews days ago , my daughter fell sick and she had to be admitted to a hospital - the bill so far is in excess of $10,000 (which I have not paid yet and do not have enough cash for that )
1-what are my options ?
2-Is OHIP reimbursment possible later in case I take a loan and pay now

please help .

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is ill - I hope she gets better soon.

I don't believe OHIP has any reimbursement policy that will cover the costs of her treatment. You will be responsible for covering the costs of her treatment until she has a valid OHIP card. Once she has a valid OHIP card, any treatment going forward will be covered. However any treatment she has already received (i.e. before having OHIP) will still be your responsibility to pay.

OHIP will generally not reimburse costs that accumulate while somebody doesn't have OHIP, doesn't qualify for OHIP or is doing their waiting period. However, there is a possibility that she does qualify for OHIP depending on having already been approved for PR so there may be a tiny chance that you could get reimbursed if you can show that she qualified for OHIP when she got sick although you had not applied for it yet. You would have to fight for this though. I am sure they are not going to jump for joy to pay that kind of an amount.

Read this thread: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/important-ohip-eligibility-info-for-all-pr-applicants-residing-in-ontario-t56695.0.html and especially posts by the user called "bartjones".

For anybody else in the same situation, that is waiting to qualify for health care, this is a reminder to make sure you have emergency / accident insurance. Otherwise it can get expensive.

OHIP will not reimburse. They will tell you that you should have applied for private insurance
