Hi All,

So my husband landed in Ontario back in August 2014 (he moved up at the same time he landed). However, being the procrastinator he is, he didn't get around to applying for his OHIP card after the 3 month waiting period. I guess he just got used to having no insurance in the US and it wasn't on his radar (and you can only being the nagging wife to an extent).
Anyway, he recently had a slip on the ice that led to a hospital visit and we didn't have a health card for him. He's going into a ServiceOntario tomorrow to apply. My question is, was he automatically covered once the 3 months passed (and now we just have to deal with paperwork)? Or did he really screw up by not going in months ago? I can't find anything beyond "there's a 3 month waiting period" online.

Thanks so much!

if i'm not mistaken, his coverage would be backdated to 90 days after landing. he will need his landing document, and i believe they will go by that date. that means his coverage started in november. he's probably not going to get a card right away. they will be able to give him his number.

i'm pretty sure that's how it works. i'm sure someone who's been here longer will pipe in to confirm.

Thanks for the reply, rhcohen. :)

An update to anyone else who may find themselves in our situation - you ARE covered. We went into ServiceOntario today and she told us his coverage kicked in after 3 months and he just needs to contact the hospital and provide his new health card number. For all the faults this country may have (you certainly see enough complaints on this forum), this was an excellent "You're in Canada!" moment for him!
