If there is no waiting period, they give you "paper card" which starts coverage immediately .........your proper photo plastic card may take couple of months to come, however the paper card along with a valid identification like PR card, DL with photo or passport is used to avail coverage...
However note that in order to get OHIP, you have to prove that you are living in Ontario... so you need to show either a valid lease or a recent bank/credit card/telephone/utilities bill with your name and Ontario address on it (they have a list of address proof which I dont recall but its available online)..... if you are enrolled for bank /credit card e-statements, then you have to go to respective bank and get that statement attested by the bank that its a true copy........they usually want to see a physical paper copy with postal address.....
Private health insurance must be taken until you can get OHIP..... also dental and bunch of other things are not covered under OHIP and you need to take additional private insurance anyways to cover those......
