I am planning to land in toronto in august. My wife will be 4 month pregnant. I have checked the eligibility for OHIP card. I understand one requirement where i have to wait for OHIP card for three months but there is another criteria where i have to spend at least 153 days after establishing residency in ontario. so does that means the coverage will start after 153 days or five months although i will have OHIP card after three months or. Please clarify.

The coverage starts after the 3 months wait. The 153 days is a requirement to keep your OHIP active or to remain eligible. It simply means you have to live in the province 153 days after establishing residency in order for you coverage to remain valid. This is just what i understand it to be not unless someone has a different understanding of it.

Exactly that ^, in any 12 month period.

If you don't stay for the mandatory minimum eligibility period, OHIP could claim back any payments made for any coverage that you have used, even if you have a valid OHIP card. Check out the exact residency requirements here http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/publications/ohip/ohip_eligibility.aspx
