Hi,
I've been living in Ontario from the 28th August 2012 as a worker until 19th Feb 2014 and from then to now as a Visitor. I had OHIP until that 19th Feb.
I'm currently applying for Permanent Residency outland and have had 1st stage approval.
My question is, Am I eligible for OHIP the day I am approved COPR as I've been residing here for 2 years?
Or do I still have to wait that 3 months after COPR?
I've also read somewhere that it could be 3 months after being approved for being a principal applicant (Before it's sent to the relevant VO)?

Cheers

It is 3 months after COPR. I don't think it matters one bit about previously having a working permit. Even Canadian citizens have to wait the 3 months when out of the country for more than 6 months, so since you will be living as a visitor for a lot more than 6 months, you will have to wait the 3 month period for OHIP to kick in.

Also, it is 3 months after completing your landing, not receiving COPR.

Thanks for the reply,
I'm interested to know more about the 2nd paragraph I've pulled from the health.gov website. It doesn't state Inland or Outland but just applying for PR in Canada, which we all are doing.

Am I eligible for Ontario health insurance coverage?

You may be eligible for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) if you are included under one of the following categories:

you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or landed immigrant, or are registered as an Indian under the Indian Act;

you have submitted an application for permanent residence in Canada, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada has confirmed that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent residence in Canada ;

AND

you make your primary place of residence in Ontario; and generally,
you are in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date you establish residence in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residence); and
you are in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12-month period.

Being here 2 years I've got the 153 days covered already

This rule applies to inland applications and first stage approval. Unfortunately it does not apply to outland applications.

I think what you mean is you've applied for Permanent Residency outland, have sponsorship approval and your file is now being considered at a visa office abroad.

If you have been residing in Ontario for the past two years, you will be eligible for OHIP before you get COPR. At some point the foreign visa office will complete an eligibility assessment of your application and, presumably, you will be found to be eligible to apply for PR. This will happen before you actually get COPR. Once the VO determines that you are eligible to apply for PR, you are eligible for OHIP 3 months from that date.

You can read about how to go about obtaining OHIP coverage in those circumstance here. http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/important-ohip-eligibility-info-for-all-pr-applicants-residing-in-ontario-t56695.0.html

I went through the process this year with my wife who is in a similar situation.

Actually, it applies to outland applications as well. It's just not as widely known.

Hi thr

I have completed my MBA from Vancouver, British Columbia(B.C) and moved to Toronto in August last year for internship and stayed back in Toronto Ontario for job. Recently I got open post graduate work permit.

So am I eligible to apply for OHIP?

I would be very grateful if anyone can give his/her opinion in this regard

Thanks

All explained clearly here but if any doubts go to Service Canada and ask given forum feedback can only really speculate on your situation.
